Outlook on the knowledge gaps to improve nature conservation of soil biodiversity
The Outlook on the knowledge gaps to improve nature conservation of soil biodiversity addresses specifically what is holding back the protection of life below the ground.
Almost 60 percent of all life on our planet lives underground, ranging from tiny organisms to larger ones such as earthworms. The underground life is essential for keeping our water clean, growing food, and capturing carbon to mitigate climate change. However, soil biodiversity is currently being threatened by intensive agricultural practices, pollution, and soil sealing.
Despite its significance, underground life remains poorly protected because there is very little research on whether current nature conservation methods work for soils. To address this issue, the dedicated SOLO Think Tank has introduced a new guide pointing out the main areas where more research is needed.
