Second Swedish Regional Nodes workshop takes place

31 Mar 2025

The second Swedish Regional Nodes workshop was held on 28 March 2025, at the Gamla Biskopshuset in Lund.

The meeting focused on the management of excavated soil masses as an important task in and surrounding urban areas, touching upon many of the Soil Mission objectives. These soil masses are generally the result of excavations, such as road construction, building construction or other infrastructure projects. They often contain materials which were there before the excavation process, such as lightly or heavily contaminated soil ro arable soil, or soils containing invasive species. Determining how best to assess, treat, and reuse these soils presents both environmental and logistical challenges. Results from the workshop will be useful for all Think Tanks, notably for the Think Tank on soil sealing and urban soils, soil pollution and soil organic carbon stocks.

Attended by 20 stakeholders and moderated by Mark Brady (Lund University), the workshop was divided into two rounds: presentations and discussions. María Ingimarsdóttir (Lund University) introduced the SOLO project and the workshop concept, Anna Sorelius (Helsingbord City Hall ) presented on management of soil masses in Helsingborg, and Daniel McCabe (Lund City Hall) presented on the management of soil masses in the Lund municipality.

Following the presentation, 3 group discussions and 1 closing discussion took place:

  • Discussion 1: Identifying knowledge gaps regarding soil mass management

  • Discussion 2: Identifying which of the Think Tanks’ knowledge gaps apply to the Scania area

  • Discussion 3: Prioritisation of the knowledge gaps, with particular focus on those identified in the first discussion

  • Discussion 4: Each group was asked to present their identified knowledge gaps and summarise their experience during the workshop

The knowledge gaps identified during the workshop, along with feedback on previously identified gaps from the Think Tanks, were reported to Work Package 4 and the relevant Think Tanks: soil sealing and urban soils, soil pollution and soil organic carbon stocks.
